George and Jackie Cadinha
Aloha Family,
Iβm sending this message in hopes of communicating clearly where Jackie is currently with her condition and what the coming days may look like.
Jackie suffered a cardiac arrest that left her without adequate oxygen and blood flow to her brain for approximately 30 minutes. Unfortunately, those 30 minutes resulted in significant and extensive brain damage.
She remains in the ICU on a ventilator. As of Tuesday at 6:00 a.m., she has been taken off all medications and sedation. Her seizures have stopped, but she remains unresponsive.
Based on what the medical team has shared with us, the extent of Jackieβs brain injury means that, if she were to survive, she would most likely require a ventilator or tracheotomy, a feeding tube, and long-term care in a skilled nursing facility. She would likely be unable to follow simple commands, communicate her needs, or have meaningful mobility in her arms and legs.
I believe we would all agree that Jackie would not want to live that way. As her husband, I know my beloved wife, and I cannot allow her to endure a life that she would not have wanted for herself.
Over these past five days, Jackie has undergone tremendous life-sustaining efforts, treatments, and testing. Despite all of those efforts, she remains unresponsive.
The medical team is giving her until Thursday, the 20th, which will be approximately 72 hours after stopping all medications and allowing them to fully leave her system. They are hoping to see whether she demonstrates any positive neurological responses during that time.
The doctors have been very clear with us that meaningful recovery from a brain injury of this extent is highly unlikely. If that remains the case, I will ultimately have to make decisions regarding the continuation of life-sustaining treatment on Jackieβs behalf.
I want to be clear: I will not put my beloved wife through a life she would not have wanted.
Please understand that Thursday is not a deadline for making that decision. However, a decision will need to be made in the coming days based on Jackieβs condition and the medical teamβs guidance.
This brings me to those who have asked about coming to see Jackie.
My request is that you please allow me this time to be with my wife and spend these precious moments with her. I need this time with Jackie, and I hope you can respect and understand that.
When the time comes, we will CELEBRATE HER the way she deserves to be celebratedβwith love, with honor, and with gratitude for the beautiful life she shared with all of us.
I love you all, but most importantly, Jackie has always loved you.
Me ke aloha pumehana a hΔlΔwai hou aku.
With warmest love, and until we meet again,
George
