What A Gift To Be Alive

My mom picked me up on Thursday morning for my first day of chemo. I had with, my special water from my Aunt and Uncle, and the encouragement and support and prayers spoken over me by each of you. We walked into the University of Minnesota Masonic Cancer Center not fully knowing what to expect, except that I would have labs drawn, an appointment with the provider, and then the chemo appointment. I’ve been at the Center more times in the last 6 weeks than I ever imagined needing.

The chemo appointment lasted three hours, including all the pre-meds to help with nausea. I’ve officially started my 12 rounds of Paclitaxel, alongside Herceptin (Trastuzumab), which is the targeted therapy going after my HER2 receptors, and that part of treatment will continue for the next year.

During chemo, I’ll be getting Herceptin (Trastuzumab) weekly, and once I’m through radiation, it shifts to every three weeks to complete the full 52 weeks. My first (Trastuzumab) infusion was 90 minutes.

Next was Paclitaxel for an hour. During that time, I had my hands and feet submerged in ice. One of the possible side effects of chemo is neuropathy, which can be permanent and impact daily life, so this is one way to try and prevent that. It was intense. But worth it if it helps protect my long-term quality of life.

I’ve included a full picture of my hair before it starts to fall out. There’s so much of this that’s outside of my control, but what I can say is that every morning since chemo, I’ve woken up exhausted, but yet without nausea. And for that, I’m grateful! 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽

I don’t know what each day will bring, and I know this may not last, but right now, I’m holding onto the present. I don’t think I’ve ever lived this fully in the moment before. What a gift it is to be alive. I’m riding this wave. 🌊🌊🌊

First round of chemo: done. 🥊🥊🥊
1 of 12. 11 to go.

Thank you for riding with me and being on this journey together! 🩷🎀

I love you all!

I'm glad you're doing the cryotherapy for your hands and feet. My husband did it for all of his chemo rounds and never got neuropathy. I also had him chewing on ice chips and healthy popsicles to prevent any mouth sores 5 minutes before and after the infusion. Standing with you in prayer! XOXO Lana
