Prayer requests:
Pray that Eliana tolerates the new, more concentrated renal feeds today with no vomiting and that her stomach pain and pancreatitis continue to heal.
Pray that her platelets stop dropping and begin rising again, demonstrating that HUS continues to leave her body.
Pray for her kidneys. She continues to pee intermittently, so they have at least jump-started. Now we need her body to show us how healthy they are. Continuous dialysis stops at 1:00 today, and the plan is to move to intermittent dialysis tomorrow. Pray that she does incredibly well without continuous dialysis, tolerates intermittent dialysis if she needs it, and ultimately demonstrates that her kidneys are functioning so well that she needs less and less dialysis, and eventually none at all. Pray that God continues to surprise us here.
Pray that her lungs continue healing until she is breathing 100% on her own, that her blood pressure and glucose/insulin levels stabilize, and that there are no new complications.
And pray for her beautiful voice to come back. ENT did not see any structural damage, praise God. She remains essentially aphonic, with no audible voice, but the current thinking is significant deconditioning. Her vocal cords are important not only for speaking, but also for swallowing and eventually taking food by mouth.
Quick update:
Respiratory continues to get better. Her lungs look really good, her breathing is doing really well, and she needs less and less oxygen. Praise God.
Neurologically and physically, she continues to make strides. She is extremely interactive and getting stronger every day. Yesterday she sat in a chair for about three hours. She still has a tremendous way to go. She isn’t standing or walking yet, but the fight is there and we continue pushing her each day.
Her stomach still hurts quite a bit, likely from both the pancreatitis and feeds, and she is still vomiting intermittently. Today she is transitioning to a more concentrated renal feed, which may be harder on her belly but is important for getting her the nutrition she needs while reducing the fluid burden.
Her glucose continues to go up and down, so that system isn’t stable yet. Blood pressure also remains variable, although significantly more stable than it once was. Fever is under control, and right now there are no infectious disease or antibiotic concerns.
Her platelets have continued to come down some. They are not precipitously dropping, and the team is watching them closely but is not deeply concerned at this point. Obviously, we want to see that trend reverse and the platelets start climbing again.
The biggest milestone today is dialysis.
At 1:00 this afternoon, continuous dialysis stops, and the plan is not to restart it. Tomorrow, for the first time, they plan to move her to intermittent dialysis because they now consider her stable enough to try it.
That’s a big deal.
Now we watch how her body handles the time off dialysis, her fluid balance, feeds, kidney markers, urine output, and ultimately how she responds if intermittent dialysis is needed tomorrow.
If she handles all of this well, we may finally begin getting closer to moving out of the ICU.
Still a lot in front of her. But today is another step.
