Dalton’s Law; Fighting for Change
In Dalton’s memory, we are working to protect patients and families facing brain-death determinations.
Current medical practices can allow a patient to be declared dead, life support to be withdrawn and organ procurement to begin before families have a meaningful opportunity to obtain independent testing, continued observation or another medical opinion. When support ends immediately after the determination, possible errors may never be discovered.
We are advocating for medical standards that follow the actual written law and require clear, objective proof—not assumptions, incomplete testing or one doctor’s opinion.
Our goals include:
- Independent second opinions and the right to transfer
- Objective blood-flow confirmation
- Complete evaluation and correction of medication, metabolic, hormonal and nutritional confounders
- Adequate nutrition, hydration and treatment during continued evaluation
- Careful monitoring of brain swelling, pressure and circulation
- Independent review of ventilator settings and possible spontaneous breathing
- National reporting of failed, incomplete, disputed or reversed determinations
- Protection against forced testing or withdrawal of support over a family’s objection for religious and ethical beliefs.
Families deserve time, transparency and the right to seek answers before an irreversible decision is made, and the decision should only belong to patient or their guardians. An unknown error rate is not a zero error rate, and professional confidence should never replace objective evidence.
Funds raised will help us continue this advocacy, educate families, raise public awareness, support future fundraising efforts and provide Dalton with the beautiful headstone he deserves.
