Allison’s Cancer Journey
Allison is still in the hospital, and right now there isn’t a clear end in sight. She continues to have fevers and spiked one over 104F tonight. We’ve spent a lot of time talking with her doctors, trying to determine what could be causing them.
Her ANC remains extremely low. It was 10 today and has ranged between 0–20 over the past ten days. This is longer than expected. She has received one blood transfusion and two platelet transfusions this week. The mucositis is still pretty bad. She’s still on continuous pain medication and receiving IV nutrition around the clock. She feels absolutely terrible in so many ways.
They’ve run many cultures, including some new different types of blood cultures today, and did an MRI today as well to see if they could find a source of the continued fevers.
The good news is they believe they have finally identified the cause. The bad news is that it’s very serious. Allison has been diagnosed with typhlitis, a bacterial infection of the intestines. Of course I had to google it right away, and that was maybe not the right thing to do. I know, I know. When the first thing that came up said "life-threatening," I tried to stop myself from reading any further. The doctors here told us it requires complete bowel rest, nothing to eat or drink for seven days, along with IV antibiotics and daily X-rays. The surgical team will evaluate her every day to monitor the inflammation. If it worsens, surgery to remove the infected portion of her intestine may be necessary.
This means we will be in the hospital for at least another week.
Allison is absolutely devastated. We all are. We are urgently asking for prayers for healing. She has already endured so much. We are praying for peace over her during this time, for complete healing without further complications, no need for any surgery, that her ANC would come up, that she would have some respite from all of this and that when it’s time for her next round of chemo, she experiences no mucositis or any other complications at all.
"Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me." Psalm 30:2
"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds." Psalm 147:3
"So my spirit grows faint within me;
my heart within me is dismayed.
I remember the days of long ago;
I meditate on all your works
and consider what your hands have done.
I spread out my hands to you;
I thirst for you like a parched land.

Answer me quickly, Lord;
my spirit fails.
Do not hide your face from me
or I will be like those who go down to the pit.
Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love,
for I have put my trust in you.
Show me the way I should go,
for to you I entrust my life."
