Allison’s Cancer Journey
We were finally discharged on Sunday, 5 days after completing Allison’s second round of chemotherapy. We had originally been scheduled to return just two days later for her third round, but Allison was still dealing with significant mouth sores caused by the chemo, which made eating and drinking very difficult. Because the medication had taken longer than expected to clear her system, her care team explained that these side effects could be more severe.
We checked in again after that, and her mouth sores were still bad enough that treatment was delayed for a full week. That extra time ended up being a blessing to Alli. She had a good weekend spending time with friends and was finally able to eat again once her mouth healed.
We checked in yesterday and Allison was admitted for her third round of chemotherapy. The hospital team has been wonderful about providing things to help pass the time when she’s feeling up to it, including a needle-felting kit, watercolor paints and paper, a LEGO kit, and even came in to help her build and program a LEGO robot.
This round, they are increasing her IV fluids in hopes of helping her body clear the chemotherapy more quickly. If everything goes well, we expect to be here at least through Friday night. The surgical team also plans to check in with her while she is admitted.
Right now, Allison is feeling okay, but understandably tired of the routine and extended hospital stays. With so much time spent inpatient, she hasn’t been able to keep up with much schoolwork, so we are working to find a plan that will help her stay on track until next year.
Our prayer requests this week are that the chemotherapy clears her system more quickly this time, that side effects remain minimal, and that Allison’s spirits stay lifted during this hospital stay. We are also praying for creativity and encouragement as we look for ways to support her emotionally through this process.
Thank you for being part of that encouragement, for your continued prayers, and for the financial and meal support that has meant so much to our family!
