Providing an update given by Chris following their appointment in Houston on 7/17:
"Alexis and I just had a positive meeting with oncology at MD Anderson. She’s in agreement with the protocol recommended by KU. Which is nice.
"Alexis and I just had a positive meeting with oncology at MD Anderson. She’s in agreement with the protocol recommended by KU. Which is nice.
Alexis has Stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer. It’s a mutation called EGFR, which is the most common type of lung cancer in non-smokers. She now begins a 12-week treatment regimen.
She’ll undergo intravenous chemotherapy every 3 weeks. She will also be on a daily oral pill (Tagrisso). Both oncology docs are highly confident in the efficacy of this protocol in shrinking / destroying the cancer cells. Very reassuring. Lot of clinical data proving out the success of the regimen. With her type of chemo she’s not supposed to lose her hair.
After 12 weeks, we’ll return to MD Anderson for another PET scan. Assuming the results show the desired shrinkage of the cells, we will then consult with radiation oncology about targeted radiation of any residual cell clusters.
She’ll remain on the Tagrisso pill essentially forever. I guess. And some level of intravenous chemotherapy, but the duration and dosage will depend on the passage of time.
Our doctors are also very bullish on the continued rapid proliferation of medical advances in this field. And the likelihood of even better treatment/curative options in the future.
All considered, today was a good day."
